Network and Advocacy program is managed by San Mala who is a prominent human rights and environmental activist.

San Mala has been a human rights and environmental activist in Cambodia for a decade. In August 2015, San Mala and two other colleagues were arrested and detained for 10 months and 14 days while they and the local community campaigned against sand dredging along estuaries in Koh Kong province. After his release in July 2016, San Mala continued his mission and activism without fear or hesitation. His unjust imprisonment was documented and published in a book entitled “Behind the Black Curtain” in 2022.

In the mission for human rights and the environment, Mr. San Mala has made significant contributions to important achievements, such as saving the Areng Valley from the construction of a hydropower dam, stopping illegal sand dredging in Koh Kong province, and engaging in numerous other small-scale activities.

Sithibal Camp is an initiated event with the aim of mobilizing youth, activists, and democracy lover to meet each other in order to exchange views and finding the solutions together to build a society and expand the circle of civil rights, freedom of expression, which is now shrinking, creating a negative impact on the lives and implementation of the basic human rights of the people.

Objectives

  • Provide opportunities for youth, activists, and experts to meet and engage in direct discussions to exchange views and perspectives on human rights and democracy issues in Cambodia.

  • Strengthen active youth networks and foster solidarity among participants.

  • Discuss and identify positive solutions to enhance youth and citizen participation in the fields of human rights and democracy.

  • Contribute to the expansion of civic space in response to its shrinking day by day.

Legal Training

We provide training on the legal basis related to constitutional rights, fundamental rights of Cambodian citizens, national and international human rights mechanisms, protection policies, and laws related to environmental protection. After participating in these trainings, youth and local communities are expected to be fully capable of disseminating this knowledge to their communities and networks, as well as advocating for the protection of natural resources, rights, and common interests from any violations.

The Training aimed to strengthening the youth engagement in environmental and human rights work and to build the stronger root of Democratic society where people know their rights and be able to defend themselves from any oppression.

Advocacy for Environment and Human rights

PED had been advocate for environment and human rights through our social media platforms and published books about the life of environmental and human rights activists in order to express gratitude and encourage young Cambodian environmental activists to persist in their fearless activism for the protection and promotion of environmental causes following their release from jail. And to uphold human rights and advocate for freedom of speech, especially in the context of a declining democracy in Cambodia.
